Building The New Goonzquad Garage Part 9

Its time to raise the roof! We finally got all of our insulation in and now we can officially move onto the next step of this building. The roof is going to be the most sketchiest part of this project but we are ready to dive right in. Hopefully we can get this done in a smooth way and have this sucker built in no time. Thanks For Watching!!!!

I highly recommend you guys using the scissor lift to have access to the roof.. standing on a palette while being moved by big birta is a big “no no” on any construction site.. you guys are great to watch but you have to start being a bit safer.. your projects are getting bigger and harder.. hence, the risks will also be higher… would hate to see you guys get hurt. Stay safe!

If the fiberglass really irritates any part of your body, like wrists, pour some white vinegar over that area before a cold shower. You already know that you'll need sunglasses on that roof. A boom lift and safety harnesses would probably be helpful. Professionals fall from heights, and it isn't a pretty sight.

You may want to check your installation instructions for the screw pattern at the purlin lines. You may be installing too many screws. It looks like you may be using the screw pattern for the eave line. Typically the screw pattern for the eave and purlin lines are different, but it all depends on the building manufacturer. More screws typically wouldn't be a bad thing (other than the extra material and labor cost), but roof screws can be a source of roof leaks.

That may or may not be viable in this case. The volume of the Goonzquad building is about 100,000 cubic feet, and it is not yet clear what the parameters of their usage timetable and thermal insulation values may be. Simeon and Eleazar would probably need to commission an independent Feasibility Study to investigate their options. The main issue of concern with solar power installations is their longevity, since they are obviously highly exposed to the weather and this can cause significant deterioration of their performance in a very few years. Assumptions will also have to be made concerning the alternatives of conventional energy sources, their predicted future costs, and the likely rises in tax rates expected to be imposed on various energy resources by the Federal Government. Overall, one would want to see that a suitably sized system would pay for itself within six to eight years, and many Chinese made products on the market simply cannot achieve such a performance. The whole matter needs careful and informed study.

Usually you leave the insulation a bit longer at the ends, take off the fiberglass for the foil to tuck over the facier and cut just short of the gutter

Guys! stop now!!! You need to be screwing the roofing screws through the ridge of the sheet not the flat section. You will use way less screws. Plus you will have leaks through the screws you have installed first up on the first two sheets. Roofing screws should have a rubber seal underneath the collar.

In most cases, corrugated metal cladding sheets are fixed through the 'peaks' when installed on pitched roofs, and fixed through the 'valleys' in vertical applications. However, roofing sheets can be fixed through the 'valleys' if specially designed weatherproof and waterproof washers and caps are correctly used. It was not clear in this episode what methods Goonzquad were utilising on this project, and whether this was correct.

Whats the deal with the 'droop' in the insulation ? Over here in Australia we put a metal mesh down (the mesh makes square holes 6" x 10" roughly) first over the beams then put the insulation on top of that which prevents any droop at all. Is the droop a requirement ?

This build is a lot more fun to watch than I thought it would be. Just a testament to how awesome you guys are I guess... I agree with the people talking safety. It ain't worth it. Speaking from experience - fell from a roof and shattered my shoulder. Two surgeries, a lot of pain, a lot of money, and years of physical therapy got me back to 90% normal but...if I could speak into the past and tell my younger self to tie down, I would in half a heartbeat.

Please get fall protection harnesses! That might not be far enough to kill you and you'd be messed up for life. Take it from somebody with a lot of preventable broken bones, they don't stop hurting just because they heal and you guys would have a long time to live in discomfort. I'll buy them if you tell me what sizes, it's that important.

Looks like you guys have your sheets pretty square to the building, its really is a bummer if they get crooked, it just gets worse the farther you go. Also, the wind will certainly wreak havoc on loose sheets, make sure they are fastened. Spray foam is a great insulation, especially when you do a hybrid of batt's and foam.
